Nexans wins major cable order for China’s new High-Speed EMU Trainsets

In an order worth more than 1 million Euro, Nexans is supplying control, power and data cables for the Chinese Ministry of Railways EMU trainsets.

Paris, September 25, 2008 – Nexans, the worldwide leader in the cable industry, has won a contract worth more than 1 million Euro from Bombardier Sifang Power, Qingdao, China to supply high-tech control, power and data cables for the series 4 High-Speed EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) trainsets currently under construction for the Chinese Ministry of Railways (MOR).

In October 2007, 20 EMU trains of 16 cars each were ordered by the MOR from Bombardier’s joint venture in China. Based on the Regina platform, transferred from Sweden for local manufacture in Qingdao, this EMU series has been developed to high standards of quality and performance to meet specific needs of the Chinese high- speed sector, and is capable of speeds of up to 250 km/h.

China High-Speed EMU Trainsets

Nexans has completed major contracts for the series 1 and 2 EMUs, already in service, and is currently delivering cables for series 3. Throughout these projects, Nexans demonstrated high levels of quality, technical service and local support from Nexans China, combined with the capability of meeting tight delivery deadlines. This resulted in an increased level of involvement in this latest contract, as Nexans now supplies a major proportion of all cables for the series 4 trains.

This latest contract is further proof of our strong, global partnership with Bombardier, especially in projects that require significant technical developments,” said Dietmar Steinbach, Nexans Global Segment Manager for Rolling Stock. “In response to the continued strong growth of the Chinese Rolling Stock market, we are gearing up to commence local production of rolling stock cables by the end of 2008.”

The control, data and power cables for the EMU trains comply with the European Standard EN and the French standard NFF. They will be manufactured in Nexans’ plants in Paillart, France and Monchengladbach, Germany for delivery in 2008, and for later deliveries by the Nexans plant in Shanghai.
